Nearly every residential system is a form of active sub-slab depressurization: a hole cored through the basement slab, a suction pit beneath it, sealed PVC pipe running up and out above the roofline, and a quiet inline fan running continuously. The fan creates a low-pressure field under your slab, so soil gas flows to the pipe and out over your roof instead of up through cracks, joints, and openings into your home.
Foundations vary and the design should match: sump-pit suction with a sealed lid where a sump exists (common in Topeka basements), drain-tile suction where a home has perimeter tile, and block-wall suction for hollow concrete-block foundations, which can channel soil gas through the wall cores themselves — a real consideration in Topeka’s older housing stock near downtown and North Topeka.
