Two numbers frame radon in Kansas. The EPA estimates 1 in 15 American homes has radon at or above its 4.0 pCi/L action level. The Kansas Radon Program’s estimate for Kansas: 1 in 4. And the state’s health department reports the average observed residential test in Kansas at 5.4 pCi/L — the average Kansas test result would, on its own, trigger the EPA’s recommendation to fix the house.
Why is Kansas so different from the national picture? The Kansas Geological Survey has published the answer, and for Topeka specifically, it comes in two layers.
Radon is the decay product of uranium, and per the KGS, a number of Kansas rock formations carry above-average uranium — particularly the Pennsylvanian and Permian limestones and phosphatic black shales that underlie eastern Kansas, including the Topeka area. As those rocks weather, they leave behind residual clay soils that concentrate the uranium near the surface, where the radon it produces has a short trip into basements.
Northeast Kansas is the state’s glaciated region — ice-age glaciers reached into this corner of Kansas and left crushed, transported rock behind when they melted. Grinding rock to fragments multiplies its surface area, and surface area is what lets trace uranium’s radon escape into soil gas efficiently. It’s the same mechanism that makes Iowa the nation’s radon leader — and Topeka sits inside Kansas’s share of it, stacked on top of layer one.
The KGS describes the delivery mechanism plainly: buildings hold slight negative pressure relative to the soil — the stack effect — and that suction pulls soil gas in through sump pumps, cracks, joints, and pipe penetrations. Topeka is basement country, which puts living space in direct contact with the source, and our sealed winters strengthen the stack effect — which is why winter readings run highest, and why a winter test is the most honest one.
Here’s the KGS’s most important sentence, paraphrased: radon levels cannot be predicted and often vary house to house. Maps and averages describe regions; they cannot describe your foundation. Two Topeka houses on the same street routinely test very differently. Which is why the entire subject reduces to one act: test your house — about $10 at the Shawnee County Extension office — and if it’s high, fix it.
